Vegvísir Symbol | History, Meaning & Modern Esoteric Use
The Vegvísir is one of the most recognizable magical symbols from Iceland. Often called the “Viking Compass” in modern culture, it is believed to guide its bearer safely. It is said to help travelers navigate rough weather and unknown paths. However, contrary to popular belief, the Vegvísir is not a Viking Age artifact – its story begins much later.
The word Vegvísir comes from Icelandic, meaning “signpost.” The symbol resembles a compass made of branching staves.
The Origins of the Vegvísir Symbol
The earliest written record of the Vegvísir appears in the Huld Manuscript, compiled in 1860 by Geir Vigfússon in Akureyri, Iceland. However, it is believed that Geir based his manuscript on earlier sources, now lost to history.
“Huld” means “secrecy” or “hidden” in Icelandic.
The manuscript is a grimoire – a book of magic. In addition, it contains runic alphabets and galdrastafir – which are Icelandic magical staves. Among them is the Vegvísir, described as a protective charm for navigation.
Notably, the Vegvísir stave appears in both the Huld Manuscript and Galdrakver. Related magical staves can be found in other Icelandic grimoires such as Galdraskræða. While part of Iceland’s broader folk magical tradition, these manuscripts show clear Christian influences and may also reflect motifs from European ceremonial magic, including elements linked to Jewish mystical sources. As similar symbolism can also be found in texts such as the Keys of Solomon.
Despite its popular Viking imagery, this emblem is first documented in the 19th century and is not found in any of the medieval historical sources.

The Vegvísir in Modern Spirituality
This symbol was believed to guide travelers through rough weather and unfamiliar terrain, ensuring they would not lose their way.
Today, the Vegvísir continues to inspire. In neo-paganism, Heathenry, and esoteric practices, it symbolizes inner direction, resilience, and trust in life’s journey. Many people use it as a personal talisman, meditation focus, or symbol of faith in one’s path.
Final Thoughts
Although, the Vegvísir may not originate from the Viking Age, its legacy is still alive. From 19th-century Icelandic manuscripts to tattoos, jewelry, and music. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of finding one’s way – through storms outside and within.
You can explore the Vegvísir symbol further in the Arith Härger videos below and listen to a powerful musical tribute by Rúnahild, who brings its spirit to life in song. Translation below.
Vegvísir Lyrics - Rúnahild
Vegvísir, vis meg vegen
Ut av min indre storm
Jeg faller saman djupt inn i meg
Eg druknar I bølgjar
Vegvísir, vis meg vegen
Når lyset sløkkjes i meg
Hald meg i livet gjennom stormar
Eg følgjer deg i mørket
Vegvísir, vis meg vegen
Når mine følelsar knuser meg
Som bølgjar imot fjell i den hylande vind
Du skimter når alt døyr i meg
Vegvísir, vis meg vegen
Eg søkjer lyset du speglar i meg
Kom til min mørkeste djupna
Kveik opp igjen min indre eld
Vegvísir Lyrics - Translation
Vegvísir, show me the way
Out of my inner storm
I collapse deep inside myself
I drown in waves
Vegvísir, show me the way
When the light goes out in me
Keep me alive through storms
I follow you in the dark
Vegvísir, show me the way
When my feelings crush me
Like waves against mountains in the howling wind
You glimpse when everything dies in me
Vegvísir, show me the way
I seek the light you reflect in me
Come to my darkest depths
Rekindle my inner fire
